I will always embrace you including grandparents in your photos and/or film. I feel a deep, deep purpose in it.

There are two ways to include grandparents in a session. Either 1.) You can book a Legacy film where they are at the center of the story, OR 2.) You can include them for a portion of your family film (as this sweet family did).

This family booked me for a newborn photo + mini-film session and the grandparents were there for the first 40 min. of our session. Their love for their daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids was so beautiful to document. After they left, the newborn session continued, but just LOOK at the tone these dear grandparents set for it! I drove home really satisfied knowing we had celebrated grandparents and a newborn in a single session.

Read on for my advice on how to include (and honor) grandparents in your session!

1. Consider a Legacy film as a birthday or anniversary gift!

Our parents don’t want more things…

They want more time.

Time with you, time with their grandkids.

Let’s bottle up time for them.

2. Show them an example of a family film.

Our folks haven’t heard of a family film and really need to see one to understand.

By watching one of my films, they’ll know better what to expect.

3. Have them jump on our Zoom call.

I love when grandparents join our pre-session Zoom call so I can answer their questions and alleviate any concerns.

4. Tell your parents your purpose.

Don’t miss an opportunity to touch their hearts by stating your purpose: to preserve their legacy of love for your kids (and their kids).

5. Coordinate outfits across the family.

Coordinate what your parents will wear with the color palette your family plans to wear.

6. Choose a location based on the story you want to tell.

What memories are we preserving?

I will always lean on you to consider an at-home session (yours or your parents’).

7. Consider a love letter voiceover.

I believe so strongly in the power of spoken word.

Let’s not wait to eulogize our parents when they’re gone.

Speak the words you want them to hear now and I’ll lay it over your film footage and music track.

8. Consider incorporating old family photos.

Send me digital files of your family’s personal photos or video footage and I’ll incorporate them in your film at no extra charge.

It will add such value to their film.
