Stretch Marks

Motherhood has its way of leaving stretch marks even after a little one is born. Today meant another one for me. As parents, we face the impossible task of loving and letting go little by little. I once heard somewhere that to have a child is to forever decide to have your heart walk around outside your body. Today she walked into her kindergarten class and barely looked back, but ya’ know…that’s OK – it means we’re doing something right.

“The proper aim of giving is to put the recipient in a state where he no longer needs our gift. We feed children in order that they may soon be able to feed themselves; we teach them in order that they may soon not need our teaching. Thus a heavy task is laid upon this Gift-love. It must work towards its own abdication. We must aim at making ourselves superfluous.”

– C.S. Lewis (The Four Loves)
