Even before picking up a camera, I was a people-watcher.
I can get totally entranced by a sweet interaction across the room. I’m pulled into a stranger’s narrative until I get caught staring and look away smiling. It sounds sketchy but I’m just all about connection.
It’s why I’ve been so excited to photograph this family. Before even meeting them two years ago, I once sat across the school gym and watched this mom and one of her boys. Have you seen fierce love in a mother’s eye? It’s totally captivating. Her gaze lingered on him, taking in every detail. There was a tinge of sadness about her look and I soon learned she was battling cancer. That battle has been fought twice and won. While she’s still coping with the after-effects of treatment, her hope is boundless and those depths have only heightened her joy.
Cancer can eat away at a body but not at love. Love is the antidote and she has plenty of it from the three guys in her life. It was a joy spending an every-day kind of afternoon in their home: a little reading, a little wrestle-mania – ya’ know, the usual.
